The Specially Adapted Housing grant is the largest single funding source available anywhere for home accessibility, and it's specifically for veterans.
The maximum SAH grant amount for 2026. Veterans with certain service-connected disabilities can use it to build, buy, or modify a home for accessibility, covering everything from ramps to full bathroom remodels.
Who Qualifies
- Service-connected disability rated by the VA
- Loss or loss of use of both lower extremities
- Certain vision, respiratory, or severe burn injuries
- Loss or loss of use of one lower extremity plus additional conditions

- Wheelchair ramps
- Walk-in showers & bathroom remodels
- Stair lifts & grab bars
- Doorway & hallway widening
How to apply: Applications go through the VA's Regional Loan Center via VA Form 26-4555. Your VA case manager can also help start the process.

A Virginia-specific grant for veterans with service-connected disabilities, funded through a partnership between the Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA) and the Virginia Department of Veterans Services.
Covers ramps, walk-in showers, grab bars, and doorway widening for Virginia veterans and servicemembers with a service-connected disability. Applications open January 1 through April 30 each year, so timing matters. Apply early.
VHDA Granting Freedom →HISA — Home Improvements & Structural Alterations
A separate VA benefit for medically necessary structural changes, available to a broader group of veterans than the SAH grant, including those without a service-connected disability rating in some cases.
Covers home improvements a VA physician certifies as medically necessary: ramps, grab bars, widened doorways, and bathroom modifications are common approvals.
How to apply: Ask your VA primary care provider for a HISA referral, or contact your local VA Medical Center's prosthetics or environmental modification coordinator.
